new iTunes & iPhoto out now!!

Apple just released updates to both iTunes and iPhoto… well there is also a Canon Printer Software Update but that seems rather irrelevant. As usual Apple is keeping tight lipped about what the updates bring but recommends all iPhoto and iTunes users to tun the update.

The Cloud WiFi

I have been using The Cloud‘s WiFi service for a couple of years now and it is great when you are out and about and need to get online.  The Cloud are the UK’s premier WiFi service, they provide the actual service for most of the well known names out there so chances are that if you have used WiFi outside of work or home then you have already used their service.

There are 3 subscription options and a Pay As You Go option.  I normally prefer PAYG but with WiFi it seems far too expensive (almost as much for 1 hour as you would pay for a whole month!) so I am going to be discussing the subscription options here: Read the rest of this entry »

New iPods on 9 September

iPod nano redThis has been rumored for some long time, but it’s now confirmed by AppleInsider that Apple will be presenting at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco on Wednesday 9th September. This surely has to be the 64GB iPod touch, probably more iPods with built in cameras, and possibly one more thing….

Alternatively, the tablet(s) may be held over for a January event.

What is a Gigabyte?

Apple and every other software author that I’m aware of have always used the historic convention of 1024 bytes (B) in a kilobyte (kB), 1024kB in a megabyte (MB), 1024MB in a gigabyte (GB), and 1024GB in terabyte (TB). Hard disk manufacturer’s have always used the convention of 1000000000 B being 1 GB, instead of 1073741824 B being 1 GB.

On the introduction of OS X 10.6, Apple have adopted the convention used by hard disk manufacturers, as explained by Apple at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2419, updated the day before Snow Leopard became publicly available. This clouds the issue of space being recovered by installation of Snow Leopard, though that is undoubtedly true.

The difference increases to almost 10% when measuring terabytes. Confusion will surely ensue when comparing file sizes between Leopard and Snow Leopard Macs, not to mention Windows and Linux PCs. I sense that this has something to do with the previous legal cases over iPod capacities.

New soft keyboard in Snow Leopard

snow-leopard-soft-keyboardAs reported at 9to5Mac, the larger on screen keyboard that comes with OS X 10.6 can be used with the multi-touch trackpad. This paves the way for a tablet Mac running full Mac OS X, not just a limited device using a scaled up iPhone OS.

When will this device be with us?
